Are You Separating Yourself From Job Opportunities?

Inspiration

The above photograph of ten birds perched on our birdbath in our backyard was taken by my son and it has inspired this post, especially in light of my son’s comment: “It’s interesting how they separate themselves by species.” It’s true, look at the picture, the five American Goldfinches (on the left) have grouped themselves together and yet separate from the five sparrows. (I haven’t quite figured out the type of sparrow even with the Field Guide to North American Birds book).

This behavior reminded me of The Making of The Planet of the Apes (the original movie), where the actors, dressed as gorillas, chimpanzees and orangutans found themselves grouped together during meal breaks; the gorillas ate with other gorillas, chimpanzees ate with chimpanzees and the orangutans ate with the other orangutans. The actors themselves didn’t really realize they had separated themselves in such a way until someone who was NOT in costume filmed it. I can’t remember if it was a cameraman or producer who actually first noticed it, so forgive me. I found that, and still do, absolutely fascinating.

Think about it: secretaries in large companies eat with other secretaries (or by themselves if they’re the only secretary in a small business), managers eat with other managers, dock workers eat with…you guessed it, other dock workers, not the foreman or the manager of the site. The point is this: we all group ourselves, categorize ourselves throughout our lifetime. It’s in our nature – it’s in nature, as is so eloquently illustrated in the above picture. Once we notice this, we can apply this perspective to our job search or our business.

Practical Application

When we’re looking for work, we tend to categorize and label ourselves, thus limiting ourselves and our opportunities. We shortchange ourselves from reaching out to a new client because they’re not within our usual parameters. We shortchange ourselves from reaching out to a new position or type of company for the same reason!

Let’s get personal

For example: When someone asks you what you do, what do you say?……I heard you! :) See? You just labeled yourself didn’t you? You proudly declared your job title, yes? That particular job title could be holding you back – you may not be able to see what you’re actually capable of, or you may not be able to see that another industry could use your talents!

You keep looking for the same group – the same job title you have or had in your last job. You keep looking for that file clerk position when you could probably be a secretary or an accounts payable/receivables assistant or trainee. You keep looking for that secretarial position when you could be a great manager! Don’t just group yourself into your former title, and don’t separate yourself from jobs that are different. You probably are perfectly capable of doing those other jobs with a little training and/or education!

What Can You do?

Evaluate what you have done, what you can do, what you can learn, and are interested in…then go from there. That’s what a job coach can help you with…to think outside of your group, your title in order to expand and/or fine-tune your search. Your talents and skills could be fully utilized in a position and/or industry that has a totally different job title but you’d miss out on it because you’re just not aware of that particular group or title.

Just because, as a secretary, you’ve always worked for a trucking company, doesn’t mean you can’t be a secretary in an insurance company or a law firm. With a little training, education and interest, you can easily transfer those secretarial skills into that other industry! The same applies to an IT specialist, or even a lawyer.

If you’ve always been labeled as a “corporate lawyer”, you can use those same skills for a non-profit organization or set up your own private practice or be an in-house lawyer for all sorts of companies and organizations!

Ask Yourself This…

Look at the above picture once again and ask yourself: Am I limiting myself with my job title? Have I put myself in a group so separate from others that I’m missing opportunities: for growth, for advancement, for change? Am I limiting myself to one position, to one type of business?

Then ask yourself: If I took away my title, who am I? What are my talents, skills, positive qualities, and interests? And how can I use these answers to come up with a different job title or align myself with a different industry?

Now do you see how the separation and grouping come into play? How have you grouped yourself? In job title? Within a certain industry? And why? Well, that part is easy. It’s a comfort issue. It is because it’s familiar, it is safe, so your eyes naturally scan the classifieds looking for…what…your former or current job title! And you pass over anything that doesn’t match, don’t you?

When you find yourself doing this, catch yourself and force yourself to actually read through every classified ad and then circle anything that seems interesting to you. If you hear yourself say, “Yeah, I’d love to do that but…” Circle it! Then write it down. You can come back to it later and answer that question. The answer usually involves letting go of your security blanket (that familiar, established job title) and attaining some sort of training and/or education.

Note that the goldfinches and the sparrows aren’t letting their species separate them from their common goal: a nice drink of water! So don’t let your ’species’ separate you from your goal: a better job or business opportunity!

A Fresh Start! You In?

Realizations

Over the course of several months now, I have been re-thinking some of my strategies and focus within my business. Strangely enough, this process has coincided with my mother’s death on June 2, 2009 from pancreatic cancer, stage 4 (her diagnosis was not even two months prior). As a result of both life-changing occurrences happening simultaneously, I have let my blog slip a little. I completed my DYK (Did You Know?) series and have been stuck and unmotivated for a few weeks…understandably so.

Being hyper-focused on my resume writing and job coaching business has not proved successful, so I have decided to gradually shut down my HelpMeGetHired website and move all of my information over to this site (I love WordPress!) to create a whole new look and feel to my business and career.

If you notice the header on my blog changing over the course of the next fewIMG_1081_1A days (or the color of my text), you’ll know I’m playing with images and having fun choosing which I like best. Shoot, I may just choose to change my header every month to keep it fresh! :) The custom header you see now is one of a mother alligator supporting her babies on her head and I particularly like it because 1) it was taken by my talented son, 2) it’s such a cool picture and 3) we can all use support, can’t we?

Decisions

I am expanding my freelance writing services to include not only my resume writing/job coaching services but also proofreading, editing and my creative writing endeavors…but, and this is key for me, I am not going to rely on one over the other.

Two years ago, I thought focusing on a specific niche and giving it my all would prove financially beneficial but I’m afraid it has only limited my vision and creativity. I found myself dependent on this niche for my survival and, for me, it just hasn’t worked out. Branching out seems to be the way to go for now.

I am working on a writing schedule in order to free up my mind and give me permission to tackle the diverse opportunities to a freelance writer. Before this, if I attempted to work on any creative writing or researched editing jobs, I’d feel guilty about not putting that time into marketing/promoting tasks for my resume writing/job coaching business and so, couldn’t really focus on anything! I would lay aside those wanderings and force myself to “beat a dead horse”, so to speak. As a result, I have felt torn and frustrated with this mentality and I’m done with it. Yay! :)

This decision will allow me to spend 3 days a week on that type of business (which I still love to do) while allowing me to spend the other 2-3 days a week on other writing work. I may even divvy up each day with hours spent on each venue! That’s the fun part…discovering what works and FEELS best to me…but giving myself permission to multi-focus, I think, is the major breakthrough. I haven’t been doing that and my income and productivity has suffered.

What’s Ahead?

Almost two years ago, I chose the domain name: HelpMeGetHired because I envisioned hordes of exasperated unemployed people slumped over their desks staring at their computer screens totally overwhelmed and alone and angrily typing in the words: “someone…Help…Me…Get…Hired!!” into the Google search window. Funny thing is, this domain name has now taken on a dual meaning as I, myself, need help getting hired for my freelance work! I find that amusing.

I will still be available for resume writing and job coaching, however, I’m not going to obsess about **making** it work. Time to let go and move on, (my favorite phrase over the years). It’s important to know when to cut your losses and move on…and surprisingly enough, sometimes when you do that, well, that’s when things really start happening!

It worked 25 years ago when I gave up on men! What happened? I met my husband! It worked when almost 8 years ago, I gave up on finding our first home. I just let go, I had had enough, was tired of looking. That same afternoon, our realtor called to let us know a house was about to come up on the market in one of the neighborhoods we were interested in and did I want to preview it before my husband? I did and it was the house we were looking for, everything was in place: floor plan, appliances, attached side garage, in our price range – everything we wanted and had been looking for for two years!

Relevance and Letting Go

How does this tie into your job search, you ask? Every 3-6 months in your job search, you should re-think your strategies. Are your efforts paying off? If not, it’s time to get creative, change up your routine(s), think outside the box, talk to new people, read new ideas and concepts.

Is your time better spent re-working your resume or taking a course in Business Management? Are you doing enough networking in ‘real life’ (not online)? If not, step…away…from your computer and go to a museum, a park, a mall and not only observe people and business but also interact with them!

You have to do something different to change your perspective and, sometimes, that ’something different’ is letting go. Let go of the notion that what you’re doing is the only right way to job hunt or write your resume; let go of your idea of your “dream job”; let go of the industry you’ve worked in for 10, 20, or even 30 years and then be open to what happens next!

You might be surprised to learn that your skills can be transferred into another industry. And that industry may be one you never thought of and probably wouldn’t have thought of if you hadn’t bumped into a vendor who works for a company who makes…bread! You realize you could use your management or marketing skills on their behalf! Or maybe you’ve always wished you could “chuck it all” and become a baker or pastry chef?

Support

The above photograph of a mother alligator and her hatchlings who have clambered upon her head for safety, while quite intimidating, is also reassuring because it proves to me that while letting go and learning something new is scary, you can and often do have the support of someone older and wiser to help you along the way. Whether you are new to the world itself or the world of business or type of business, there is someone out there who is experienced in doing what you want to do; you have only to clamber onto their heads or pick their brains to find out how to do it yourself! Okay, that was a quirky analogy but I bet you’ll remember it! LOL :)

Once you let go, take a deep breath, smile – yes, SMILE – and feel good about this step. Be eager to learn what awaits you. When you realize that you are breathing easier and feel lighter, then you will know you’ve done the right thing. What next? Start noticing the little things: whom you meet at the store, in your driveway, at a park or museum or what type of business catches your eye in a phone book/flyer or on your walk to the vegetable market. Go ahead and daydream of jobs or industries you’ve never seriously considered but were always curious about then, playfully, start investigating that interest.

Ask yourself: Is there someone in town you can call for an informational interview? Who doesn’t want to talk about themselves and what they do for a living? Find an experienced and successful person in your field of interest and invite them for coffee or lunch, telling them you’d greatly appreciate their expert advice. The important thing to remember is…don’t push it. Play with several ideas, meet new people, learn new things, and see what happens.

I’m about to do that myself so I’m right there with you! Let me know what you are letting go of and opening up to in your life. Have you done so before and has it worked? Are you scared to do so now? Letting go can be a very scary step but I believe it’s worth it. If you feel it’s time, join me! I’m stepping off the cliff hoping to fly. Let’s see who comes along with wings! :)
